2024 to present, Charlotte

Promoting Graham County, NC as ‘Your Natural Destination’ for experiencing the wonder and culture of the ‘secret side’ of the Great Smoky Mountains. Coordination and post Covid relaunch of the Azalea Festival happening June 8, 2024. Establishing greater community engagement and coordination amongst organizations, businesses, and community members within Graham County to encourage economic growth and a stronger community vitality both of which increase our attractiveness as a destination.

Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center | Program Director
2021 to 2024, Stecoah, NC

Development and management of all arts and cultural programming including the JAM program, the An Appalachian Evening concert series, as well as the annual Harvest Festival. Expanded music and arts programming, established the Smoky Mountain SpringFest and managed the enhancement of the Textile Studio and a new website design through a North Carolina Arts Council Spark the Arts Grant. Managed all graphic design and branding as social media channels.

Public Art

Macro-Micro Mural | ARTP3161 Fall 2021

Outdoor mural on the Rowe Arts building bordering the Hechenbleikner Lake certified wildlife habitat on the campus of UNC Charlotte; participated in all stages of the collaborative design, development and execution. Research for the project included reading environmental literature, microscopic studies of pond life, visits to the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, visiting local wildlife centers and habitats, and conversations with numerous guest speakers.

Founders Day Cake | ARTP3161 Fall 2021

Art installation commissioned by UNC Charlotte Chancellor Gaber's office; participated in a collaboration creating the surface design and painting of an over-sized "cake" that toured UNCC campus throughout 2021-22 school year.

  • UNCC Digital Media | 2019

    I prepared and lead a short lesson on creating repeat patterns in Adobe Illustrator as a part of a brand packaging assignment. At the conclusion of the course I provided Professor Cynthia Frank with additional repeat files to use as examples for future courses.

  • Graham County Schools | 2019

    Led the Graham County Schools Digital Media students in a logo development project for REVVED UP a local nonprofit focused on economic development.

  • Greater Charlotte Homeschool Community | 2016 - 2019

    Led nature walks and Field Study days for local homeschool educators and small homeschool groups and co-ops; served as a resource for nature and field study in the greater Charlotte area.

  • Paideia Fellowship | 2014-2015

    One of two talks I have given which emphasizes the mental and emotional importance of parents as educators nurturing their own learning experiences and continuing to further their own self education.

    My summer and afternoon enrichment activities included drawing, design and photography skills.

  • Makerspace Charlotte | 2015

    I set up an experimental printmaking workshop as a part of Makerspace Charlotte’s family outreach programming.

    Invited to be a guest blogger for Secular Homeschool on the topic How to Be A Homeschool Geek.

  • HINTS Homeschool Fair | 2015

    Co-hosted with my husband, sharing our experience with mentoring robotics and bringing technology like arduinos, raspberry pi’s, and 3D printers into our homes and lives of our children. We emphasized a link between handcrafts (like simple potholder looms) and technological tasks electronic wiring - the same pattern making and recognition are used with really only a change of scale and material.

  • First Robotics team 3506 Yeti Robotics | 2014-2015

    I led the marketing team to win their first ever Chairman’s Award resulting in the entire team attending World Championships in St. Louis. I taught basic marketing and public speaking skills, vector design through Adobe Illustrator, mentored them through a redesign of their logo, screen printing T-shirts and more.

  • Harvest Homeschool Co-Op | 2011-2012

    I designed and taught a curriculum that incorporated history, geography, economics and literature for 8th and 9th graders. This was an AP prep course utilizing William Bennett’s “America: the last best hope.” The first topic addressed in the course was American Exceptionalism.

  • Charlotte Mason Institute | 2002-2012

    Charlotte Mason Institute was formerly known as ChildLight USA, an organization for which I served as co-founder and advisory board member. I was a part of the team who organized the very first Charlotte Mason conference in the United States. My sessions and talks included topics such as The Fun and Philosophy of Algebra, Technology in Education, how to establish and organize a co-op, studying paintings (also known as Picture Study), self education, and a signature talk titled A Sense of Place among others.

  • Greater Charlotte Homeschool Community | 2001-2003

    I taught art courses grounded in the elements and principles of design. I developed 2D and 3D curriculums with a focus toward providing homeschool students with materials and experiences comparable to those available to public school students. Several of my students went on to complete art degrees.

  • CMeLearn | 2001-2003

    I was one of five co-founders of CMeLearn; one of the largest homeschool organizations in the greater Charlotte area and one of the first organizations created to support families educating their children using the philosophies of Charlotte Mason.
