One big realization that I had as I began the semester's work was that it was centered around printmaking. In analyzing the Mud Quilt Project and trying to name the works it dawned on me when I used the word ‘Impressions’ that this project was actually a printmaking process. I am making prints on the landscape using ceramics. When I examined the digital collages I knew that I was drawn to the layering process and wanted to explore more this link between the layering in the work and the layering of our lives through time and place. So I’m entering into this next phase fully invested in this idea of exploring and pushing the boundaries of printmaking. I’m experimenting with contour line inspired shapes and also scratch marks. Last semester in one of my pieces, Snake Hunter, I used an indexical mark in slip that I really liked and I also made a scratch mark with one of my tools. In a critique with Keith he liked the idea for the mark but said he could identify the tool. He encouraged experimenting with mark making but advised creating my own tool. These are marks from my first scratch stick. In this piece I was trying to figure out how to make long sheets of paper by laminating the paper as it is pulled. I embedded threads into this piece but did not attempt to put 118 threads in the piece. I dipped the final piece into my clay slip to pull the color up into the work. The paper began to disintegrate and tear from it’s own weight after being wet for some time. One thing that may help with is is using an internal sizing. This piece is much longer and does include all of the threads. In this piece I dyed the ends of the fiber in the clay before I made the piece. I think there are several reasons why this might be happening. First, I’m not removing the sizing from the thread beforehand so the threads are not as absorbent as they could be. Second I’m not using any sizing in the paper itself - sizing increases the adhesiveness of the paper fibers. This would be great for the construction but complicate the process of embossing the piece - I could not roll up the wet work without a protective barrier because it would stick to itself. Third the addition of the clay itself seems to increase the delamination. My mom was born and raised on Dry Creek. I was born and raised on Beech Creek the same as my grandfather. When I first moved to Charlotte the absence of the sound of running water, especially at night, was an emotional loss. The creeks here are foreign – warm and slow moving with jagged and roughly broken rocks. The small unnamed creek that runs through my suburban neighborhood is a tributary of Mallard Creek. It is mostly dry and filled with construction debris. Small silent rivulets connect pools of murky brackish water. During the pandemic when I first became interested in working with clay again, my sons told me about the clay that they discovered in this creek. I have been digging and working with this beautiful cone 6 clay since March of 2020. It is a rich chocolate brown and at cone 10 it is a rich metallic glaze. In this work I have transformed the clay from this unfamiliar creek, molding it into the shape of the familiar stones of my Appalachian home. Using archived insurance maps they identified 118 mills in this seven county region; more than a quarter were located in Gaston, Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties. These mills were established during the 1880s to the 1920s and were a part of a rapid Southern industrial expansion. Mills advertised in Appalachia for workers and news of jobs and opportunity spread by way of mouth. Moore and Ingalls write that the textile mill economy imprinted in the region in such a way that it is still "a direct threat to the continued existence of open, rural farmland"; the mills " acted as building blocks that gave much needed momentum to an urban forming process that heretofore had proceeded only deliberately." Because I do not have enough fiber to create an entire piece I have to mix it with another pulp fiber - arabaca. I love the way that the paper looks when it is wet. In this piece I was trying to figure out how to make long sheets of paper by laminating the paper as it is pulled. I embedded threads into this piece but did not attempt to put 118 threads in the piece. I dipped the final piece into my clay slip to pull the color up into the work. The paper began to disintegrate and tear from it’s own weight after being wet for some time. One thing that may help with is is using an internal sizing. This piece is much longer and does include all of the threads. In this piece I dyed the ends of the fiber in the clay before I made the piece. These are paper ‘quilts’ and a quilt by definition is 3 layers. I think there are several reasons why this might be happening. First, I’m not removing the sizing from the thread beforehand so the threads are not as absorbent as they could be. Second I’m not using any sizing in the paper itself - sizing increases the adhesiveness of the paper fibers. This would be great for the construction but complicate the process of embossing the piece - I could not roll up the wet work without a protective barrier because it would stick to itself. Third the addition of the clay itself seems to increase the delamination. bottles use my white slip with red Beech Creek slip and a cobalt carbonate wash. I’m experimenting with contour line inspired shapes and also scratch marks. Last semester in one of my pieces, Snake Hunter, I used an indexical mark in slip that I really liked and I also made a scratch mark with one of my tools. In a critique with Keith he liked the idea for the mark but said he could identify the tool. He encouraged experimenting with mark making but advised creating my own tool. These are marks from my first scratch stick. I have a long sordid history with the color pink. Using pink within the contour lines/shapes feels like carving out my own space/place. These indexical swipes have a ways to go to look fluid and natural.
